Senior German politician and former Federal Minister for Environment and Nuclear Safety Norbert Roettgen has announced his candidacy for the leadership of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union (CDU), in a press conference in Berlin on Tuesday.

During the press conference, Roettgen said that they were not considering a "possibility for political cooperation," noting that Die Linke "is a strong supporter of Putin in terms of foreign policy."

He denounced what he described as "war crimes [that] have been taking place in Idlib," adding that "markets, schools, hospitals, houses are the targeted objects of the Russian bombardments."

"I have not heard a single word of condemnation from the Die Linke party. That is why; we are not considering any possibility for political cooperation," said Roettgen.

Last week, CDU Chairperson and German Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer, who was widely seen as the favoured successor of Merkel, confirmed that she will not run as German chancellor in the upcoming 2021 federal election.

Roettgen's surprise move makes him the first official candidate for the post as CDU party leader.
