Recent reports have made clear the need for more personal protective equipment, or PPE, for doctors and nurses on the front line of the coronavirus fight — as well as the fact that there will soon be a shortage of such supplies in the federal stockpile. As a result, individuals and organizations around the country have been sewing handmade face masks, with the aim to donate them to local hospitals. But how effective are they, really?
