Crowds of anti-government protesters flooded Madrid streets on Sunday, demanding Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez's resignation.

People gathered in front of the PSOE (Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) headquarters in Ferraz Street, criticising prime minister's handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

The protesters, many not following social distancing rules, listened to the Spanish national anthem and chanted patriotic slogans, waving anti-Sanchez banners.

Spain has begun easing restrictions after almost two months of strict mandatory lockdown measures imposed due to COVID-19.

According to reports, the coronavirus death toll in Madrid has dropped below 100 in a day for the first time since mid-March, with 400 newly confirmed cases on Sunday. Sanchez reportedly intends to extend country's state of emergency into June, with its initial end date being May 24.

As of Sunday, the country has registered 230,698 coronavirus cases and 27,563 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.
