USA: National Guard block protesters on Minneapolis I-35W motorway

The National Guard prevented protesters from taking over the I-35W motorway in Minneapolis on Sunday. The motorway was the scene of one of the key protests on Friday night, where thousands of demonstrators descended upon it to voice their anger at the killing of George Floyd.

Armed officers and several heavy vehicles appeared to be blocking most motorway lanes, as a smaller group of protesters gathered. They could be heard chanting Floyd's name as they attempted to reach the motorway to protest.

Several protesters accused the police of giving no orders to disperse before firing tear gas at them.

"Within a few minutes, no warning, get showered by flashbangs," said protester Doug Hock.

Protests and demonstrations have taken place across the US in reaction to Floyd's death, with riots and looting also occurring in some areas, including Minneapolis.

Floyd, a Houston native, died in Minneapolis earlier this week after a police officer knelt on his neck for almost nine minutes as he was recorded saying, "I can't breathe" and "Don't kill me."

Four officers involved in the incident have since been fired. The officer who knelt on Floyd was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday.
