The GNV Azzurra ship arrived at Lampedusa on Tuesday morning to provide space for the 14-day quarantine of newly arrived migrants.

Local medics were seen standing at the boarding area while several vans transported the migrants to the gates, where Red Cross personnel wearing white protection uniforms were waiting to receive them.

The giant ship was sent by Italian authorities in compliance with a mandatory quarantine rule for new arrivals amid a large influx of migrants to Lampedusa. The GNV Azzurra is set to host a total of around 700 migrants, according to reports.

The southern Italian islands of Sicily and Lampedusa have recently seen a massive spike in landings by undocumented arrivals overwhelming local migrant hotspots. The actual occupation of the available residential areas exceeds several times the maximum capacity. Hundreds of migrants are reported to have left the centres.
