US President Donald Trump defended his decision to withdraw the US from the "unfair and one-sided" Paris climate agreement as he addressed the Group of 20 summit on Sunday.

"The Paris accord was not designed to save the environment, it was designed to kill the American economy," Trump said. "I refuse to send millions of American jobs and send trillions of American dollars to the world's worst polluters and environmental offenders."

Trump said that, under his administration, environmental stewardship had been a "sacred obligation."

"Over the last four years, we have made incredible strides to ensure that the United States has amongst the cleanest air and cleanest water on the planet," he said.

He claimed that since withdrawing from the Paris accord, the United States had reduced carbon emissions more than any nation anywhere in the world.

The event, this year being held by Saudi Arabia, is largely taking place online due to the coronavirus pandemic.
