Second day of G20 Leaders’ Summit held virtually as COVID-19 prevents meeting in Riyadh

The 15th meeting of Group of Twenty (G20), hosted by Saudi Arabia, is convening virtually on its second and final day on Sunday, November 22, in place of the meeting originally planned to take be held in Riyadh.

The Saudi Arabian Presidency has selected the theme of ‘Realizing Opportunities of the 21st Century For All’.

The three key agenda items to be addressed under this theme are: ‘Empowering People, by creating the conditions in which all people – especially women and youth – can live, work and thrive’, ‘Safeguarding the Planet, by fostering collective efforts to protect our global commons’ and ‘Shaping New Frontiers, by adopting long-term and bold strategies to share benefits of innovation and technological advancement’.

The coronavirus pandemic is also expected to be at the centre of the discussions.

The summit brings together world leaders to discuss international economic cooperation. The G20 members are Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union (EU).

In addition to the G20 members, other countries are invited to participate. Spain is a permanent guest invitee to the G20 meetings. In 2020, Jordan, Singapore and Switzerland are invited as guest countries.
