About 150 protesters gathered on Friday in a small town of Kalkar, west Germany, outside the venue where the AfD (Alternative for Germany) party conference will be taking place on the weekend.

The convention is due to kick off on Saturday, with 600 delegates and 100 guests, despite other parties having cancelled theirs due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Protesters were seen holding anti-AfD banners, waving LGBTQ and other flags and chanting slogans such as, "all together against fascism."

Tight security measures and strong police presence could already be seen around the conference venue, as more anti-AfD protests are expected over the weekend.

"We want to give an unfriendly reception to the participants who arrive here, and we want clearly say, this politics is not welcome here," said Markus, one of the protesters.

"37 years ago I was here for the first time to protest against the breeder nuclear reactor. Today I'm here to stop the new fascist power in Germany," said another protester, since the venue of the conference is a former nuclear power plant in Kalkar.

Local authorities obliged on Friday all the 600 participants to wear face masks during the event to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
