HAPPENING NOW—MCCONNELL & SCHUMER SPEAK TO THE PRESS: Sen. Mitch McConnell and Sen. Chuck Schumer hold separate press conferences to discuss their parties’ agendas heading into the end of the year. Earlier today, a group of bipartisan senators announced a new $908 billion COVID-19 relief bill. The bill includes some Democratic and Republican proposals in hopes that it will garner enough support from both sides of the aisle to pass before the end of the calendar year. However, absent from the bill is another round of stimulus checks, despite the fact that both parties, as well as roughly 77% of all Americans, support additional direct payments. Schumer is also expected to call on McConnell to begin confirmation hearings in early January for Pres.-elect Joe Biden’s cabinet picks, immediately following Georgia's runoff elections, in order to hold a vote right after inauguration. In January of 2017, the Senate held multiple hearings for Pres. Trump’s picks before he was sworn in, and Schumer has said that they should continue to follow precedent.
