Merrick Garland, President Joe Biden’s nominee for attorney general, appears for his confirmation hearing vowing to prioritize civil rights, combat extremist attacks and ensure the Justice Department remains politically independent.

During the hearing, Garland chokes up when speaking about his family & anti-Semitism saying “My grandparents fled anti-Semitism and discrimination. The country took us in and protected us. I feel an obligation to pay back."

Garland is widely expected to sail through his confirmation process with bipartisan support.
