This Virginia man, who is homeless, was kicked out of a motel during an ice storm. Earlier in the day, Gwendolyn Carswell paid for him to stay at a Roanoke Econo Lodge to avoid the cold, after they were turned down at another motel. But the motel owner called police to remove the man from the room, despite her pleas, because he hadn’t been listed as an official guest. The hotel has a strict no-visitor policy, the owner said.

Carswell told local media she was unable to take him to a shelter because they were all full, but she eventually found a hotel willing to house him.

Every year around 700 people who are, or at risk of, homelessness die of hypothermia.
