Supporters of the Islamic Ennahda Movement political party took the streets of the Tunisian capital, on Saturday, in a rally called by the Movement's leaders under the slogan “Defending legitimacy, institutions and the constitution.”

“For several months, the country has been witnessing irresponsible practices and attitudes that seek to interrupt the democratic process in the country, question its feasibility, and disrupt the government and sovereign state institutions,” the Movement said in a statement about the rally.

“The call for the rally comes to express the concern felt by all Tunisians about the increasing intensity of political bickering and hostile rhetoric among political rivals, as well as the failure to prioritise the citizens' worries and the current situation in the country,” the statement continued.

The security forces reportedly blocked Habib Bourguiba and Mohammed V streets, and cordoned off the area while preventing the entry of vehicles, amid fears the protest would lead to unrest.

Tunisia's political climate has become turbulent following a cabinet reshuffle, leading to tensions and a power struggle between President Kais Saied and Prime Minister Hichem Mechichi.
