Colombian President Ivan Duque took part in the launching ceremony of the CONAT (Command Against Drug Trafficking and Transnational Threats) at the Tolemaida military base in the municipality of Melgar on Friday.

The 7,000-strong elite force will be deployed to the areas of drug production and the border with Venezuela.

"This force of nearly seven thousand men, all full of conviction, patriotism, and a sense of unrestricted defence of the national interest, is born with the purpose of breaking, striking, and subduing the structures of drug trafficking and transnational threats, linked to the illegal exploitation of minerals, trafficking of species, people, and of course, any transnational form of terrorism," said Duque.

Colombian paramilitary and criminal groups acting from the Venezuelan territory have been causing of tensions between Bogota and Caracas. Duque has repeatedly accused the government of Nicolas Maduro of protecting FARC guerrillas operating in the border area.
