A worldwide shortage of computer chips is expected to slow down or even stop production at major carmakers, including Tesla, and also at Apple and other big tech firms.
Korean carmaker Hyundai is understood to be an exception, but the shortage is expanding from system chips used in cars... now to memory chips.
Market researchers at TrendForce expect the price of server DRAM to rise as much as 40 percent this year, and for demand to outstrip supply for for as long as 300 days, stretching into the third quarter of this year or beyond.
Server DRAM is much more profitable than other products, so this is expected lead to a surge in earnings at Samsung Electronics, which analysts forecast to make a record high operating profit this year of around 41 billion U.S. dollars.
