South Korea today has confirmed fewer than four hundred new cases of COVID-19, a decline from Saturday's number, though that's mainly due to fewer tests being done over the weekend.
Our Kim Dami on the line with the details.
Dami, what's the latest?
Right Devin, the daily number of new cases has dropped into the three hundreds the exact figure three-hundred and 56,... but only because, like you said, fewer tests were carried out over the weekend.
The daily number of cases has been between three-hundred and four-hundred for the past week.
And most of them are still cluster infections, especially at workplaces and factories.
In fact, 19 out of 71 cluster infections that emerged in the last two weeks are at factories.
There were eight new deaths, raising the total death toll to over 16-hundred.
And now,... let's briefly talk about the country's vaccination program that began this past Friday.
Right Devin, South Korea's first COVID-19 vaccinations started on Friday with the jab developed by AstraZeneca, and on Saturday we saw the rollout of the Pfizer vaccine.
The country aims to inoculate around three-hundred-and-65-thousand people by next month, and to achieve herd immunity by November.
But there are still concerns, especially ahead of the new school semester starting this Tuesday.
In-person classes will resume for first and second graders in elementary school and high school seniors.
That's why the government has extended the current social distancing level for two more weeks.
The Deputy Director-General of the Central Disease Control Headquarters, Kwon Junwook, urged all students and staff to strictly follow the quarantine measures, and not to hold welcome parties for freshmen in college.
