At least 36 people were wounded after a shootout broke between armed men affiliated with a local strongman named Habibullah Ghoryan and security forces, in Herat on Thursday.

Several damaged buildings and vehicles could be seen on the scene.

"I came from work, from the clinic to my home, then they opened fire that hit electricity pillars, and then it hit the ground. I was on my way then suddenly a bullet was shot on to my leg. There is no one here who supports Habibullah Ghoryani," said Khaliq Daad, an injured civilian.

The firefight took place during the attempted arrest of Habibullah Ghoryani, who has an arrest warrant issued by the court as he faces charges of murder and intimidation.

SOT, Khaliq Daad, Injured local (Dari): "I came from work, from the clinic to my home, then they opened fire that hit electricity pillars, and then it hit the ground. I was on my way then suddenly a bullet was shot on to my leg. There is no one here who supports Habibullah Ghoryani (local strongman). The government is just killing the public. The government does not focus on people, they are directly attacking the people."

SOT, Amanullah, Injured local (Dari): "My family called me, they were scared. I came to help, then they have opened fire on me. I saw the soldier then held up my hands and said 'Leave me! I am a labourer, I am a civilian' but they shot me anyway."

SOT, Ismail, Injured civilian (Dari): "In which constitutional law is it written that the government can open fire using RPG and tanks in a residential place? I have not heard or seen such an act neither in the constitutional law nor in human rights. I am complaining to the governor about such attacks or events."
