VIDEO NOW: Acting DLT director on nearly 50% of RI unemployment claims believed to be fraudulent

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Nearly half of all claims for jobless benefits in Rhode Island in the last year are suspected to be fraudulent, according to data just released by the R.I. Department of Labor and Training.

The numbers show DLT has stopped 426,643 of roughly 900,000 claims that were filed in Rhode Island between March 2020 and March 2021. Of those, 56,365 have been confirmed to be fraudulent.

Acting DLT Director Matt Weldon said $37.8 million in fraudulent claims were paid out, out of a total of $2.8 million.
