Multiple rockets could be seen launching into the skies above Gaza bound for Israel early on Wednesday, amid the worst outbreak of violence between Israeli and Palestinian forces in years.

Hamas has taken credit for the barrage of rockets, which targeted central Israeli cities including Tel Aviv, and left two dead in the city of Lod.

The attack came after Israeli forces struck a second tower block in Gaza City, the al-Jawhara Tower, after the Hanadi Tower was levelled in a strike on Tuesday.

The Israeli military said it hit 130 targets in Gaza overnight after 200 rockets were fired at Israel on Tuesday. Targets included the home of a top Hamas commander, Hamas's intelligence headquarters, two attack tunnels that came near the security barrier and rocket production and storage sites, according to the Israeli armed forces.

According to Gaza's ministry of health 43 Palestinians have been killed, among them 13 children, while hundreds have been wounded, since the start of the recent hostilities, while six Israelis have died.

Tensions have been running high over the planned eviction of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem and related protests, with repeated clashes also breaking out between Palestinians and Israeli police at the al-Aqsa compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, during Ramadan
