An Israeli air strike struck a high-rise tower block in Gaza City in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

An explosion could be seen as the al-Jawhara Tower was hit followed by the sound of shattering glass. Palestinians were also spotted pointing skyward as lights from Israeli aircraft passed overhead.

The building reportedly contains both commercial offices and residential flats, and is the second high-rise to be targeted by Israeli forces after the Hanadi Tower was levelled by an air strike on Tuesday.

The Israeli military said it hit 130 targets in Gaza overnight after 200 rockets were fired at Israel on Tuesday. Targets included the home of a top Hamas commander, Hamas's intelligence headquarters, two attack tunnels that came near the security barrier and rocket production and storage sites, according to the Israeli armed forces.

According to Gaza's ministry of health 43 Palestinians have been killed, among them 13 children, while hundreds have been wounded, since the start of the recent hostilities, while six Israelis have died.

Tensions have been running high over the planned eviction of Palestinian families from the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in East Jerusalem leading to multiple violent clashes in recent days.
