MPs on the Women and Equalities Committee think that the Body Mass Index (BMI) is broken, and it is fuelling a body image crisis.

Negative body image is widely perceived as solely a young women’s problem. But research by the Committee has shown the issue to be wider reaching; over a third of the adults in the UK reported feelings of anxiety or depression from their body image.

The Committee’s research found BMI was an inaccurate system for measuring health. The Committee says Government intervention is needed to address the reliance on an outdated measure at the heart of this body image crisis.

The research and recommendations in this video reflect the work of the MPs Women & Equalities Committee and their inquiry into body image.
