The number of pupils absent from England's state schools rose by two-thirds to 204,000 in the fortnight to Thursday, 30 September.
It comes as schools up and down the country struggle to cope with the rising infection levels with some reverting to online learning to stop the spread.
Anecdotally many are considering shutting down for two weeks rather than one week as a self imposed circuit breaker.
