Alireza Sadeghi Barzani of Isfahan province holds the world record for longest basketball kicked or punched into a basketball hoop with an impressive distance of 15 metres. Footage filmed in an Isfahan gym on Wednesday shows Barzani repeating his record with ease.

The record was documented in the UAE by the Guinness World Records but Barzani says that is not even his personal best.

"My record is set for 15 metres, but my real record was not 15 metres, it was between 20 and 23 metres. God willing, if the necessary support is provided, my real goal is to be able to set this real record. Because, in my opinion, 15 metres is not a special number,” Barzani stated

Alireza Sadeghi Barzani was diagnosed with polio when he was only two years old making him unable to walk on his own at a young age.

His disability has made him find creative ways he can still be athletic, he even says he has other ideas for another world record up his sleeve.

"I have a very interesting idea, which in itself can be a very attractive record. I can hit the ball kick the ball with my crutch cane on one side of the field into the basketball hoop on the other side of the field. This can also be a record in its own right," he said.

Barzani trained for 11 years to make this world record with a strenuous workout routine he does three times a week to keep him in shape to punt the ball with his hand.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Alireza Sadeghi Barzani, Iranian disabled athlete and Guinness world-record breaker (Farsi): “My record is the longest basketball kick from the ground with a punch or a hand kick, which was from a distance of 15 metres. This is recorded in the Guinness World Records.”

SOT, Alireza Sadeghi Barzani, Iranian disabled athlete and Guinness world-record breaker (Farsi): “I have three bodybuilding workout sessions a week, which I do. And it took me 11 years to set this record in Guinness.”

SOT, Alireza Sadeghi Barzani, Iranian disabled athlete and Guinness world-record breaker (Farsi): “Now, my record is set for 15 metres, but my real record was not 15 metres, it was between 20 and 23 metres. God willing, if the necessary support is provided, my real goal is to be able to set this real record. Because, in my opinion, 15 metres is not a special number.”

SOT, Alireza Sadeghi Barzani, Iranian disabled athlete and Guinness world-record breaker (Farsi): “In 2010, a friend of mine said to me: 'When you have so much accuracy in kicking the ball with your hand from the ground, why did you not have the idea to set a record?' I said: 'What idea?' He said: 'For example, you throw the ball in the basketball hoop and record it in Guinness.' I said: 'Well, it's an interesting idea, I will go and practice.' I went and started practicing. When I saw that I could easily do this with a soccer ball from the middle of the field, I went one metre, one metre more, back to reach the end of the field, which was 26 meters with a soccer ball. This idea came to my mind from that day.”

SOT, Alireza Sadeghi Barzani, Iranian disabled athlete and Guinness world-record breaker (Farsi): “Well, the lack of support from our officials was one of the main problems that I could not, unfortunately, get closer to my goal in these 11 years. Sometimes when they helped me, I got closer [to my goal]. That's the only reason it took so long.”

SOT, Alireza Sadeghi Barzani, Iranian disabled athlete and Guinness world-record breaker (Farsi): “I had two big dreams; one was setting my record in the Guinness [World Record] Book, which, thank God, I achieved, and the other is to watch one of the best football matches in the world up close in the stadium, which, God willing, I will see very soon.”

SOT, Alireza Sadeghi Barzani, Iranian disabled athlete and Guinness world-record breaker (Farsi): “Honestly, I have a very interesting idea, which in itself can be a very attractive record. I can hit the ball with my crutch cane on one side of the field into the basketball hoop on the other side of the field. This can also be a record in its own right. God willing, I can set that [record] as well.”

SOT, Alireza Sadeghi Barzani, Iranian disabled athlete and Guinness world-record breaker (Farsi): “The moment I set my record was very neutral for me. I had no reaction at all to this. I was not delighted at all. You know, when one goes a long way to reach something, one's sense of everything is neutralised. Unfortunately, that big moment was also neutralised for me.”
