A decision to seat the Bahraini king beside Britain’s Queen Elizabeth the Second during her 90th birthday ceremony has sparked reactions from prominent rights organizations.
Amnesty International’s UK office has also slammed the move, reminding British officials of the Bahraini government’s crackdown on peaceful protesters. Amnesty, in an earlier report, voiced concern over Manama’s actions to curtail freedom of expression and suppress dissent. However, the ruling Al Khalifah family has turned a deaf ear to such scathing remarks, pressing on with its heavy-handed crackdown against the protesters. Bahrain has witnessed almost daily anti-government rallies since the beginning of a popular uprising in 2011.
