Russ Zimmer, Asbury Park (N.J.) Press -- Sal Rinaudo and Meghan Vadon aren't like other students at Middletown High School South. Not because they are special-needs students, but because they are prom royalty.

Sal and Meghan dined and danced, along with five more special-needs couples and other students, at South's junior prom, which was a week ago Friday.

Before the evening drew to a close at Jacques Reception Center in Middletown, the votes were tallied and Sal and Meghan were chosen by their classmates to wear the crown and tiara as prom king and queen.

The mothers shared pictures and videos with the USA TODAY Network in hopes that the community would see how important experiences like the prom are for special-needs students and their families.

"Life is good," Stephanie Cartier said. "They were in an inclusive environment at the prom, and that’s what we want for our kids.”
