Threats Shut Down Detention Center Hunger Strike

The Berks County Residential Center in Pennsylvania has been the site of an ongoing hunger strike for 22 women. Over the last few weeks, the women have refused to eat as a protest of the United States' policy on asylum seekers. The women are now eating one meal a day after they allegedly received threats from immigration officials, but say that they plan to resume their strike next week. The women participating in the strike brought their families to the United States to seek asylum from the overwhelming gang violence in Honduras and El Salvador. They and their children have been detained for over a year, despite Immigration policy that says children cannot be detained for more than 20 days.
