Kevin McCarthy's stunning withdrawal from the speaker's race left a power vacuum at the top of the House GOP, and so far, no clear favorite has emerged to fill the void. Republicans floated several possibilities as replacements, with some even offering the idea of an “interim” or “caretaker” speaker. Daniel Webster of Florida, Paul Ryan of Wisconsin are just two names. But lawmakers were still digesting the news, and huddling to plot a way forward, and it wasn’t clear that any of the suggested names could win the 218 votes needed to hold the speaker’s gavel.
