Belgium: Finalists named for EU's Sakharov human rights prize

The shortlist for the annually awarded Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought was announced on Tuesday at the European Parliament in Brussels. The candidates are two Iraqi women who were former captives of self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) a former Turkish newspaper editor Can Dundar and a leader of the Crimean Tartars Mustafa Dzhemilev.

Started in 1988 the Sakharov Prize honours individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms. The winner, selected by the Conference of Presidents, will be awarded on October 27.
