In Southern California on Friday, emergency officials said that they were searching for five people missing and feared dead or trapped by deadly mudslides and have expanded the search area. At least seventeen people have already been confirmed dead and now three days after the mudslide, officials have warned that the chances of finding more survivors was becoming unlikely. Triggered by heavy rains, the massive mudslides occurred prior to dawn on Tuesday, when walls of mud and debris cascaded down hillsides that were that had been stripped bare of trees and shrubs last month by wildfires, including the Thomas Fire, the largest blaze in the state’s history.
