Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea Peter O'Neill welcomed delegates and his fellow members of Parliament to the capital city of Port Moresby on Friday, as the 2018 Papua New Guinea APEC summit kicked off.

O'Neill lauded the organisers of the event for an "outstanding" job and took the opportunity to reflect on how the country is "changing for the better", which he said is mirrored by increasingly positive reportage.

"This is a great event of great importance to Papua New Guinea and to the APEC region. You are remarkably well placed to help secure a stronger future for our region and I look forward to embracing this unique opportunity and a greater shared opportunity", he said.

The Asia Pacific Economic Corporation (APEC) summit is being held for the first time in the Pacific country of Papua New Guinea and will run until November 18. Representatives from the 21 APEC countries will meet to discuss points of mutual interest, with trade being high on the agenda.

US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend the summit. They will be represented by US Vice President Mike Pence and Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev.
