Representatives of all 193 signatory nations of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are congregating in The Hague on Monday, November 19, for the 23rd Conference of State Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).

The annual conference oversees the implementation of the CWC, as well as promote and review compliance with the treaty’s objectives. Since its entry into force in 1997, the CWC has been the most successful disarmament treaty, with over 96% of all worldwide chemical weapon agents destroyed under OPCW verification.

Last year, Russia eliminated all of is 40,000 metric ton chemical weapons stockpile in compliance with the treaty. Only two CWC members have yet to complete the destruction of their declared arsenals: Japan and the United States.
